THE HISTORY OF THE FESTIVAL For many years, the King's Highway used the Free Methodist Bible Camp & the 2 Free Methodist churches (Thunder Bay & O'Connor) as venues to organize fundraisers for various needs in our community. We featured many genres of gospel music & local talent from the various churches in the Christian community. We also held Bluegrass church services & concerts featuring local bluegrass musicians.
The King's Highway travelled to many bluegrass festivals in the US & Canada. We were fortunate enough to see the Blue Ridge & the Smokey Mountains where bluegrass began. We also met many of the of the groups we are fans of.
In 2009, we felt a need to have a local Bluegrass festival since there are many people in the area who play and/or enjoy coming to bluegrass events. We have always felt the church camp in Kakabeka Falls was the perfect venue for such an event! (also where Eddy & Monica were married!).
Our first festival was a 1 day event which went over well, so in 2010, we decided to have it for 2 days. We had a great response from the local bluegrass musicians & fans & the "KAKABEKA BLUEGRASS FESTIVAL" has grown so that in 2011 we had a line up of campers & RV's at the gates ! (Just like a REAL festival!)
This is a non-profit event which aims to promote bluegrass music in this district by featuring the many talented musicians in the area. As the festival grows, our dream is to be able to bring in bluegrass bands from outside of Northwestern Ontario.
The festival is organized by the King's Highway but is run by the many musicians & fans of bluegrass music who volunteer their time & talents. Without them there would be no festival. All proceeds are shared by the performing musicians & the camp (to help with expenses & make improvements).
In June 2012, we planned a 3 day event on June 22nd, 23rd, 24th. Thanks to those who helped us fund raise, we are happy & proud to say we realized our dream & hired our first out-of-town band , BLUE WOLF, from Minnesota. Of course, we featured the many talented bluegrass groups in the area. For the first time, we will be included the “BLUEGRASS IDOL” event throughout the weekend. Bob Sweeney was the winner & won a spot in the 2013 line-up. Concessions will be available featuring our famous "pulled pork" on a bun! See y'all there!
In June 2013, we hosted BLUE WOLF again because they enjoyed our festival so much they wanted to come back! We also hosted TIM & CINDY ROGGENKAMPfrom Pequot Lakes MN. More wonderful people! Later that year we attended their Festival in Pine River.
